Window to wall ratio (WWR) x absorptance of external walls (α)

The influence of two constructive parameters on the energy consumption of office buildings: window to wall ratio (WWR) and absorptance of external walls (α).

This post assesses the influence of two constructive parameters on the energy consumption of office buildings: window to wall ratio (WWR) and absorptance of external walls (α). The assessment was performed by using the computer programme EnergyPlus. The model to be simulated comprises the constructive details obtained by surveying office buildings located in the city centre of Florianópolis, southern Brazil. Simulations were performed by using climatic data of Florianópolis. The two constructive parameters were changed at increments of 10% while all the other details were kept the same. In total, 324 simulations were run. For the base case, the energy consumption ranged from 71.0 kWh/m2.year (α=10%; WWR=10%) to 104.3 kWh/m2.year (α=90%; WWR=90%). It was observed that the greatest differences on the energy consumption occurred for the same WWR and different absorptances. Therefore, by changing absorptances in a wall with small windows, the energy consumption may increase up to 21.6%, while in a wall with large windows, the energy consumption may increase up to 3.1%. Thus, results obtained from the simulations allowed to identify the influence of absorptance and window to wall ratio on the energy consumption of office buildings located in Florianópolis.
